"This Dataset Will Self-Destruct in..." Will AI's Datasets Vanish Into Thin Air?

Introduction

In recent years, there has been a growing trend towards using self-destructing or ephemeral datasets in artificial intelligence (AI) development. These are datasets that are intentionally designed to "self-destruct" or become unavailable after a set period of time or once certain conditions are met. Proponents of this approach argue self-destructing datasets can help improve privacy and security in AI systems. Conversely, critics warn these datasets raise new challenges around transparency, reproducibility and fairness in AI. In this post, we’ll explore what self-destructing datasets are, why they’re becoming more popular, and whether you should be concerned about their use in AI systems.

What are Self-Destructing Datasets?

Self-destructing or ephemeral datasets are datasets that are programmed to become unavailable or "self-destruct" after a predefined event occurs. This event can be the passage of time, such as the dataset disappearing after 1 week. Alternatively, it can be the completion of a task, such as the dataset deleting itself once it has been used to train an AI model. The datasets essentially have built-in expiry dates after which they cannot be accessed or used.

The idea behind self-destructing datasets is to improve privacy and prevent misuse. By making sure datasets don't persist indefinitely, the risk of them being hacked, stolen or misappropriated should decrease - well that’s the theory.

Why Are Self-Destructing Datasets Gaining Popularity?

There are a few key reasons self-destructing datasets are becoming more popular:
